Introduction
This is my personal investigation. We are starting this investigation by conducting a series of tasks in order for us to experiment so that we can find out what our interests are and also our approaches to photography. I am interested in photographing traces or remnants of people and what they have left behind within the environment. I am keen to start these tasks so that I can start experimenting.
Exercise #7: The Public Stage
in this project i have to photograph a pubic location focusing on location and composition background and subject . this is something that interests me as a matter of improvement that i can work on and the way to build my confidence when photographing in public and the anxiety of photographing other people especially strangers. it will benefit my to successfully pull this of as i know i am not doing something wrong but i still feel as though doing this i am invading boundaries of some one els and i would like to stretch my i ideas of being intrusive and think less like that.
CHRIS DORLEY BROWN
In this work he uses the background of buildings to enrich the photographs of people and the .it is a work where the people nag-ate the space in the historical frame work. it combines the 2 aspects of street photography. it uses a historically significant background contrasted with the people. its part of the east end. and photo graph and the people are a and the composition of his work is something important to the work he uses a combination of old pre existing buildings before the war and old buildings with a newer history to them bit later and the people there with there differing stature size shapes who bring more life to the photos and tern it from a simple structural peace into the actual stage of the work.
in this image there is multiple elements such as the people walking or the positioning and style of the building. the first thing to catch the eye in this image has to be the medical cros on the side of the building with a lot of vertical lines and few purely horizontal lines in the image and the angle of the building at the edge of the road an the image respectively reflected in here as well as the moderately large scale of the building in comparison to the people on the street as a small scale importance to the building in the image. it makes me feel as though there is a hidden significance that most people on the street would not notice.

Joel Meyerowitz
with this work he went out and photographed people on the busy streets of the city and some of the bizarre events on the events that happen or unique frames. some are just a regular street scene be it a couple walking through a smoke or the person sprawled on the floor. With him using people to make his photos come to life. we went around, looking for interesting people and places to photograph some. He seemed to happen upon by coincidence and secretly took them. and he originally started some what nervous and less confident but there is still a manner of confidence i wish to reflect in my work.
In this peace the eyes are initially drawn to the most immense contrasting pint of the smoke consuming the couple with the matching brown over coat and the. lines of the shadows bring the subject into the view. the darkness is contrasting the central light and the edge of the frames having less details compèred to the central frame. he is capturing a strange event with little common sense to it. the contrasting lighting the bright rays of sun contrasting the dark aspects of the shadows and the contrast mostly scene in a manual focus camera using film compared to what would happen if it was done with a digital camera.

My first attempt
Going to soho at night while i went to the theatre and thought i could use that to try and work on my confidence in photographing people in a public location. i want to work on that more than i have i would like to improve on these ad photograph more around the location there is so much more i could do if just go to photo graph here more and explore . I decided on this project as i felt it could help challenge me as i felt like i needed to branch out .
in this i was like a stage hand in the sage that is my photos moving around behind the scenes helping create the emersion of the photo. i will try doing a peace when i return to a certain spot every time and see how that will go. as to understand how to manipulate the stage to change the size of the stage as it as one solid thing in the same place and all the people there are my actors. i don’t think with this work what to fully do and so i feel i should continue this and try a different method of this.
I found this short film clip from a film that i had seen before so I used this as inspiration for the next part of the project. In this film clip it is about a man who revisits a certain area every day to photograph. I used this idea to create a series of images where I had seen different changes. I decided to photograph "my little section of the world" . and to make a project of progression of the time in a small stage. to attempt the style in an easier and smaller scale.

I have a location in mind to go photograph a certain area.
this peace came about partly by confusion i was told we had to take fotos of what we saw while traveling down my street and then was informed to either make diptychs or triptychs or to make a slide show so i did i decided to show the disgusting habits of people and show something about them whether it be a story to tell or a view in to there tastes. and so i came up with these 10 photos and put them in to diptychs.
thease are the works when thay were firs built
this is my next step on improving my work with the photo collage and create a layered work with photos and the were taken bak to a previous location to photograph it where i had gone to photo graph it before.
these are my final images which i plan to put into one cohesive book
this was my second work of art to use and it was a book comprised of images which are ether bak and white or collard or with different textures. and the work turned out well with the work being quit a new experience when learning how to bind a book like this though it is quit fragile when you move the pages i could se the pages separating over time if it is opened too much.
1) I believe that the photos that i make are a cause of me processing the world in a pleasing form of control and to proses an appealing environment and that he photos i make have a more shallow meaning than i would desire
2) I would like to have more depth and meaning to my photos and that there should be more meaning than just the simple structure i have some ideas like i would like to photo graph litter and show something about the people who left it to show a fraction of them like how archiolggsts use ainchent dumping pits to show life of aa person int that time
2) I would like to have more depth and meaning to my photos and that there should be more meaning than just the simple structure i have some ideas like i would like to photo graph litter and show something about the people who left it to show a fraction of them like how archiolggsts use ainchent dumping pits to show life of aa person int that time
exercise #11 :dream city
the task is to photograaph your nearest city as though it were the creation of a dream and the photos are that of the reality of the world arround reflecting the figments of the imagination.
lewis bush
with this work lewis bush seems to phot graph sights and serene's of `a city of wonder and a mog pog of diferent ideas and styles as thought it was damped up i feel that the black and white images help this as it .
in this image of a building front with construction work around it seems to be this separated thing from the rest of the scene the main structure in the scene is what first daws in the eyes and then you look out and notice all the other details within the scene that surround it with the eyes seeing the contrast of the dark wall and the bright sky. the work just shows hidden details that you might miss that adds to it as thoge in a dream you only noticethe details if on a second glance .
Luigi Ghirri
these imiges are from the impossible landscape a serese of imiges taken by Luigi Ghirri and are similar in the idea as the dream city
and it allways feals like its a dream.
and it allways feals like its a dream.
The Impossible
in this work i found a profound sense of wonder befall me when i saw the sky that day and how the colours lit up there face and how the coolers danced across the sky with the orange of the sun set contrasting the blue of the sky and the strange way in how the deferent phones piked up on the deferent colours.
this is 4 attempts to grasp what i wanted to do for this piece of work and these are the results. I would like to find some more ways to make this different and work to visualise i ned to experiment but i felt like i had tunnel vision so i just tried different ideas to understand if these appealed to me i will use some of my images from this to change my exhibition so i will add that to this.
the image and the way the perspective was taken in and the angle accuses the ends to look slim and the centre broader so with the way the photos are connected the images loo as though there taken with a fish eye lens but it isn't exactly the same effect but it is close enough to warrant a comparison to a fish eye lens. and it reflects the broken ides of the human mind when creating a dream s though the world is flipped over itself similar to the film inception or 2 contrasting world.

Exercise #5: Hidden beauty
with this one you need to take somthing mundane and photo graph it in a way to make it same more interesting take it out of contexst do what you like but there is multiple things you can do.
Alejandra Carles Tolra
in this work we focus on her work about Jane Austen fans and about communities and friendships and the sense of belonging . and the images were from her book where we belong which focuses on a group of Jadeite’s who the artist meet up with and documented her time with them and it started of with her just observing but close to the end the photos feel more involved.
|
we were given a set of photo graphs and we were made to put them on a line from most staged to least staged.
here is where we were given a bunch of Alejandras works we had to put these word s on what we considered to be the right place for them to go and the words fit with the ideas of the work then we had to pick the word to photo graph a version of it and tghese are the results
My response
the work was a hard place trying to find the peace of work and the work can be hard when you have a time limit and the photos all embody one of the many words listed of it and the locations i travel around an photo graph the images in my own time and then i used them to try a and embody those ideas laughter and this was three different places and the work of the fruit of my labour.it is a work of stress though due to my state of mind while i worked on it.
her is my final part of the work and the image here is the image is still the and is a beautiful pace to me and the whay it utilises light and the refection of the light on to a there and the final part of it with the street be hind it the whole peace was well done this was taken after watching a play and while waiting for my sister to meet some of the meny actors it also contains 2 peaples leggs cut of at the waste in frame which is accidentally pleasing to me and the small accidents added to the actual buity of the imige and it grows more beautiful the more I look at it.
mirrors and windows
john Szarkowski
he created a book containing photos that Szarkowski considered as windows or mirrors but he set the idea of mirror and window as a spectrum to which mainly photos had aspects of both windows and mirrors in them and so though they were organised in both the thing is that the photos can be arranged however the reader sees fit. here is the firs page of the book
|
the film rear window is an example of the very concept of windows and mirrors
the film focusing on a photo journalist who recently got injured in an accident and is now stuck in his apartment resorts to look aout his window and witnesiss a suspicious nabore.

with this we worked on wether we first had taken photos that were more of a mirror or more of a window and then we were given a group of photos and a line of tape and 2 post-it notes and arranged the images from one side being mirrors to the other side being windows and the posit notes stat that we arranged the images along the tape on wether their more of a window or a mirror an this was the results ones that feel more like a mirror seam to be of a location that could be intimate or personal to the artist while the windows would show a work that felt more like it was taken by a outside witness.
here is a spectrum of the work with most of my work on first reflection is seeming to be more of a window but to me they reflect my own view of the world and my own opinions and what i do with the photos is also more of a reflection of myself in this and how the work i do with the images is also significants.
personal investigation of mirrors and windows.
Nico Frolich
here is some of the images by nico Froehlich and there environmental portraitures
the image hear is of 2 boys sitting in a chip shop eating chicken and the photo is seemingly natural but with the lighting with the light hitting half the face and the subjects facing away from the camera with what seems to be a blank expression gives the viewer the feeling of some disgruntled teens having a picture taken with them not wanting to be in it there seams to be a more nuteral more melancholy.
Hicham Benahoud
with this image it looks like a normal class room but with a figure standing on a stall in the centre of the room with a vid in the centre where there should be a head there is a paper like structor resmberlent of a flower almost but with the void in the centre and the other students around act mostly un faced by the actions apart from on e may be looking a bit but is mostly focused on there work. the artist reflects a contrast between the pedantry in the school and contrast that with the freedom he makes the children reflect when they are in the centre of the room.
Portraiture experiments
here are my attempts with a cooperation form ned and we both equally came up with the ideas for this and worked on trying different thing working on the ideas with light and trying different strengths and couloir’s of the light and the work of the subject in relation to the light and the work i have acheved quite a bit but i could try next time trying to taking photos in the natural environment in public. i could introduce more objects and props and change the focus of the camrera to improve the work. and take more angles. i coud cange up the focus i can try to remove the shadows more.
zohra opoku
heare you can see more of my ateempts such as with more of them being out side and less of them are done at the studio back drop but i stiill used some of the lights and removed some of the shadows i also e njoy the fact that i used the rain on the lense to obscure the face as it helps make each of the photos uneque and intresting. I believe it mostly came out well and it seems pretty well i tried some poses with my partner for this but they weren’t too comfortable with it so I decided to try the style of obscuring the face similar to the work of zohra opoku .
My work
Here are some of my portraits and then I see of people I know cause it’s not like I’m less confident on but here they are and diesel results I would like to improve on it a bit there’s some kind of weird shots Sumner blurting out her focused I’ve probably had some better photos that a later date and replaces
manual settings experiments
ISO is how sensitive to light the film is and is referred to as speed and the ISO start at 100 200 400 800 1600 3200 6400 12800
and the lower the number the brighter it is for example you
400 day 800 erly evning 1600 night

with this we were testing about manual photos so i started by changing the camera to the setting labile p to get a good balence with the shutter speed at 1000/1
and the and f18 with the ISO at 1600 the n i adjusted the aperture to 16 and 13 to change the brightness and to cainge the image i als tried out what it would look like if it were in black and white.

sally mann
Well this works there seems to be that the exposure is quite dark with the image compare to other images you might get with less contrast of course is the obvious cemetery with the young girl with the cigarette whereas drawn the separation of the foreground from the background where the aperture was changed to create that shorter focal point but I do immediately drawn to Centre of the image you can also notice there is a person on stilts behind them which is quite an interesting hidden image which you might not notice when you first look at this piece of work there’s also another girl to the side of her he seems to be looking off into the distance at the person in the background
Independent work
But the spell of work I tried to go for something I got people on the environment are they on that train is harder than you think a real struggle for me I was supposed to go out but I was but I need someone else there to help talk to other people and ask them if it’s alright to take photographs of them but I decided to go to a location I realise haven’t photographed much and decide to get some people there okay most people that were pretty willing to do this and I think I’ve got some good lighting on some these images
Nico Frolich work shop
With this I like my ideas of shadow but it was a waste as the image is over exposed but i like the split of the shadow on the person and I also enjoyed how I got on with the task as the first main point was to ask strangers on the street to photograph them and I felt proud of achieving that and the fact I was able to do this alone is a great accomplishment to me and the

Nico Frolich own responce
With this work I tried making something that seemed mundane but if you knew my family you would realise is slightly off and this is my idea of my work and so this is the outcome i tried firs with my friend walking down the street reeding a book then my nan wathcing a show she would not watch on her own then my mum out in my garden during this time with my cat and then i got out a game my nan would not normaly plaay and finaly got a photo of my sister chugging orang juice
